Indiana agrees $7 million tax break to keep Carrier jobs in state: company.
Recently, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence have received praise for convincing Carrier to keep 1000 factory jobs in the US, and it has been reported that Carrier will get $7 million in tax breaks in return. While this gesture is a step in the right direction with regards to saving the middle-class job market, offering tax breaks as an incentive to keeping jobs in the US is not a solid solution to the decline of middle-class jobs. I can see how it this act might demonstrate to what lengths Trump is willing to go to preserve US jobs, but it just isn’t enough for a lasting impact. This somewhat reminds me of the rampant corruption in the cities during the Gilded Age. In this case, the corporation is bolstering support for Trump with this act and receiving money in exchange. Likewise, in the Gilded Age, political machines were known for employing urban bosses to pay off city residents to receive their votes and gain influence in government. What are your thoughts on Trump’s exchange with Carrier? Do you think financial incentive would help in the cause of saving US jobs? Why or why not?
